The Excitement and Satisfaction of Serving God

In a newspaper cartoon, an office worker eating lunch with two companions states: “The highlight of my workday is this ham sandwich. From now until quitting time, nothing else will be as rewarding.” While it was just a cartoon, I thought about its message. Millions of people on planet Earth are employed in environments lacking either excitement or satisfaction.

Serving God in a pastoral ministry stands in stark contrast. The thrill and sense of fulfillment available in ministry is so unlike our cartoon character. As a pastor or ministry professional, we have the privilege of being God’s ambassadors and carrying on a ministry of reconciliation 24/7. Seeing people come to faith in Christ is exciting (Luke 15:10—There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents). That joy extends to the pastoral ministry as well. 1 Peter 5:4 indicates that a God-honoring pastoral ministry will bring rewards from Christ Himself (the Chief-Pastor).

It is thrilling to see lives changed by the work of God in their lives. As pastors, we are able to be up-close and personal as these transformational miracles take place.
