BBC&S launches new concentrated online seminars

Summit Institute, an online education initiative designed to equip Christians for greater ministry and service, will offer its first two-week, online seminars next month.

An extension of Baptist Bible College & Seminary, Summit Institute seminars will focus on a range of biblical topics, current theological issues, and practical ministry applications. Details are posted at

The online education format allows people to learn where they live and work in concentrated, two-week formats. The focus is on collaborative learning and online discussions. Interaction with highly qualified facilitators and fellow students can take place at anytime of the day or night.

Participants can include church members looking to expand their capacity to serve, adult learners considering an advanced degree, missionaries and others serving in foreign countries, traveling businesspeople aiming for ways to learn more, and teachers and counselors who may also qualify for continuing education credits.

"Summit Institute brings our mission of excellence in biblical education for effectiveness in ministry leadership to a wider range of participants," said Dr. Jim King, a Baptist Bible Seminary professor and Director of Summit Institute. "This fulfills our passion at Baptist Bible to mobilize the church."

Dr. King, who recently became director of the online Master of Science in Biblical Ministries program at Baptist Bible Graduate School, is a veteran educator and a primary force in the development of distance education at Baptist Bible College & Seminary. He is a certified online instructor with the Walden Institute, a pioneer in online teaching and course development.

First seminar in June
The non-credit seminars are open to anyone with a desire to serve Christ in their local church or other ministry setting. There are no academic prerequisites. Certificates of Completion can be earned for each seminar. Certificates may be considered for later college credit in evaluating your work and life experience.

One seminar is slated to start in June:

-- 1 Peter: An Overview with Sherrie Holloway, an associate professor at BBC&S and a feature speaker at the 2008 LYFE Women's Conference. It runs June 23-July 3.

Future seminars are planned in the areas of counseling, small groups, teaching, and theological issues ranging from the emerging church to postmodernism. For information on registering for seminars or questions, email summitinstitute@bbc.edu or call 570.585.9349.

The learning and setting can provide interaction on a more personal level. Such opportunities can include pastors participating with their deacons, school administrators and teachers, Sunday school leaders and their class, and church or ministry leadership teams.
