Homecoming time for recognition, celebration
Special recognitions for students and alumni highlighted Baptist Bible College & Seminary's annual Homecoming.
Many activities and ceremonies were held during the week ending Saturday, October 13. They included Parents Day and opportunities to mark the 75th anniversary of BBC&S.
The celebration carried the theme "Our Family Reunion” to commemorate the historic year.
Alumni awards
The recipients of this year’s alumni awards were:
• Alumnus of the year is Dr. Jim Grier ('57), long-time Vice President and Academic Dean at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary.
• Outstanding Pastor is Dr. Steve Viars ('82), who is serving at Faith Baptist Church in Lafayette, IN.
• Outstanding Layworker is Darlen Knafel ('70), who serves through her local church (First Baptist, Elkhart) in numerous ways.
• Outstanding Educator is Dr. Rodney Decker ('74, BBS '78) who teaches in our Seminary.
• Outstanding Missionary is Jane Schmitz ('83) who serves under ABWE in Cameroon.
Other alumni-related activities included dedication of an Alumni Kiosk, a special area adjacent to the Jackson Hall rotunda. The kiosk features nine small screens, each showing pictures from a decade in BBC&S' history. The classes of '47, '57, '67, '77, '82, '87, '97 and '02 were honored at the alumni banquet.
Hall of Honor
Four recipients were recognized at this year’s Hall of Honor induction ceremony. Induction into the Hall of Honor is BBC’s most prestigious athletic award.
• Mr. Jim Huckaby was the men’s basketball coach from 1968–86 and from 1992–94. He also coached cross-country in 1970. He was inducted into the NCCAA Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. He was also instrumental in the formation of our current athletics program.
• Dr. Friedie Loescher played basketball from 1955–59 at Baptist Bible Seminary. He still holds the record (27.4 pts.) for Best per Game Point Average. He has been in administration over athletics since 1966.
• Mr. Ken Mosher coached men’s soccer from 1968–78 and transformed a young program into a conference powerhouse. He also headed the junior varsity basketball team and assisted with the men’s varsity program. He served as women’s soccer assistant coach from 1998–99.
• The 1978–79 Men’s Basketball Team. Members brought home BBC’s first national championship when they won the 1979 NCCAA Division II championship. Team members were: Jim Bargfeldt, Phil Close, Rick Cole, Duane Early, Mark Malin, Bill Muller, Mike Ryall, Dave Spink, Donn Weber, Zac Wilcox, Jim Huckaby (head coach), Russ Howard (assistant coach), Don Drake Jr. (head trainer), and Dale Ostrander (assistant trainer and manager)
Homecoming
The annual Parents Day program included skits, student and alumni testimonies, musical performances, and the presentation of the Homecoming Court. BBC&S President Jim Jeffery also spoke during the program.
Each residence hall prepared activities and food that reflected a particular decade, spanning the life of BBC&S. Activities included old-time photos, apple bobbing, '80s trivia and a dunk tank.
Students Megan Davies and Joe Mieden were elected queen and king during the homecoming court.
The BBC Defenders emerged victorious from all of their athletic contests. The men’s and women’s soccer teams and the women’s volleyball team won all of their games while the men’s and women’s cross-country teams placed first at BBC’s sixth annual Homecoming Invitational.
