Volunteers tackle critical projects

A new retaining wall by Thomson and Vibbard halls, extensive work on Jackson Hall windows, and landscaping between the Recreation Center and the Phelps Student Center were among the projects tackled by volunteers serving on the BBC&S campus in July.

BBC&SThe work was a benefit to the greater campus community and the BBC&S Maintenance Department in particular, as well as to the workers themselves who participated in Volunteers Week.

"I enjoy it because everyone works to make this a better place for the students," said Karissa Scott of Seaford, DE, who has been coming for a week with her family each year for the past 15 years.

Nearly three dozen volunteers and their families participated. The volunteers' work also included painting inside Jackson Hall and maintenance in and around Buckingham Hall.

Workers and their families gained an inexpensive time together and heard from special chapel speakers, including Frank Judson from the Office for Student Development and Professor Mark McGinniss of Baptist Bible Seminary.

"We brought our youth group and pastoral team," said Jessica Laing, a 2009 BBC graduate from North Jackson, OH, who attended with her husband Rob Laing, also a 2009 graduate.

"Because we're newer to the church, it gave us a chance to bond with our students, do hard work with them, find out where their frustrations are, and work through all that. We really enjoyed the week; it was a good building experience."

BBC&S is hosting more camps and events this summer on campus, including Teen Leadership Conference and two additional Defenders Sports Camps.
