Decker memorial service set for June 7
A memorial service to honor the life of Dr. Rod Decker, a longtime Baptist Bible Seminary faculty member and mentor to countless students, is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, at Northmoreland Baptist Church, located at 21 Ripplebrook Road near Tunkhannock, PA.
Dr. Decker died May 25 after a lengthy battle with cancer. A private graveside service was held on Thursday, May 29.
A Professor of Greek and New Testament at BBS since 1996, he was a well-respected author and scholar of languages, speaking and writing with authority. Three books by Dr. Decker are set to be published this fall. Prior to teaching at BBS, he taught for six years at Calvary Bible College and Theological Seminary in Kansas City. He also spent 12 years in pastoral ministry.
"Rod Decker was a good friend, brilliant colleague, and one of the best Greek teachers in the entire world," said BBS Dean Dr. Mike Stallard. "But the thing I will remember more than anything about Rod is that he loved the Word of God like no one else. He was a stickler in the biblical languages and literal interpretation. That helped to keep the Seminary faculty anchored in the details of the Bible. It was God's Word that mattered, not our words."
"His clear and scholarly work was a constant reminder to all of us to take scholarship seriously while remembering that what we were doing was for God's Church. He loved men who were being trained for ministry and did not want to fail them. But above all, Rod loved the God of the Word and the precious gospel that brings men to faith in Christ. Up and down the hall at Baptist Bible Seminary, we are mourning a great loss. Dr. Decker's role will be filled, but he will not be replaced. His legacy in written works and remembered testimony will live on -- 'he being dead, yet speaketh.'"
Dr. Decker earned a B.S. in Bible at Baptist Bible College in 1974, majoring in Pastoral Ministries. He earned a Master of Divinity degree at BBS in 1978. He also earned a Master of Theology degree from Detroit Baptist Seminary and a Doctor of Theology degree from Central Baptist Seminary.
"Reading Koine Greek: An Introduction and Integrated Workbook" and two commentaries on the Gospel of Mark -- "Mark 1-8: A Handbook on the Greek Text" and "Mark 9-16: A Handbook on the Greek Text" by Dr. Decker will be published this fall. "Reading Koine Greek" is an in-depth yet student-friendly introduction to Koine Greek, informed by more than 25 years of classroom teaching. Baylor Press is publishing the two-volume commentary on Mark. One reviewer described the two books as an "exegete's dream," noting everyone who engages with the Gospel of Mark in its original language can profit from the texts.
He authored two other Greek study books "Temporal Deixis of the Greek Verb, Vol. 10 of Studies in Biblical Greek" and "Koine Greek Reader." He wrote other smaller books, articles in works edited by others, and pieces for scholarly journals. He also served multiple times as a guest lecturer in a range of venues and edited a Bible study website -- www.NTResources.com.
"Rod Decker's love for God, the Word of God, the Church, and his students was evident to all who served with him or who were impacted by him," said BBC&S President Jim Jeffery. "He was an example of an authentic follower of Christ in his life, family, and church. As a scholar, Rod was one of the best in his field of Greek and New Testament studies, recognized at the highest levels of research. Growing up in a pastor's home and also on a sheep farm, he sought to develop pastors who could feed, lead, and care for God's flock."
