New Recreation Center dedicated during 'Celebration' week
The new Recreation Center at BBC&S was dedicated during formal ceremonies held Saturday, October 12, with the special festivities serving as one highlight of the enjoyable Celebration on the Summit homecoming week.
The 62,000-square-foot facility, which saw its first use in June during summer sports camps, has quickly become a campus fixture.

"We're especially grateful for what God has done," said BBC&S President Jim Jeffery. "We're grateful to those who gave generously, for their sharing and vision."

Special recognition was given by President Jeffery to Maintenance Department staff and volunteers who helped create a high-quality facility that opened debt-free and at significant cost savings.
Chapel, conferences, camps, and major events like graduation will benefit from the new facility.
Those giving remarks during the formal dedication program included state Sen. John Blake; Jim Burke, Vice President at Wayne Bank; John Greening, Chairman of the BBC&S Board of Trustees; and Scott Cleveland, President of the BBC Student Leadership Council.
Now a senior, Scott recalled years of walking past the area as it transformed from the site of an outdoor pool and tennis courts into the Recreation Center -- a location for chapel, activities, and more.
"Now, we as students walk past a building that is done," he said. "It is a place to do homework, to play pick-up basketball."
After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, refreshments were provided on the upper deck of the Recreation Center. Guided tours of the new facility were also offered.
The state-of-the-art facility features a one-ninth-mile track, three basketball courts, a climbing wall, exercise, cardio and aerobic rooms, a stage, and more.
There are also four tastefully furnished gathering spaces, several classrooms, and major office space. An observation area near the Athletics Department offices includes tables and chairs. It is a great place for holding informal meetings or just hanging out high above the activity on the floor below.
Planning and early groundwork for the Recreation Center began in 2009. Now complete, its use will extend from the campus.
"I am excited for this building to be bridge-builder between the community and our institution," said Mike Show, BBC's Director of Athletics and Recreation, who leads both Defender Athletics and the use of the Phelps Student Center and the Recreation Center. "It can help our students get more involved in serving and involved with people building relationships."
Highlighting the new Recreation Center came during Homecoming & Family Day, an annual time of reconnecting and fellowship. Other activities included student-led concession stands and activities across campus, Defender volleyball and soccer games, special parent recognition, and the Open Mic variety show of student presentations and entertainment.
Earlier in the week, the new building was the site of the annual Bible Conference, "Gospel-Stamped Lives."
