Volunteers serve critical role during summer

Painting stairwells and offices in Jackson Hall, installing suspended ceilings, and tackling residence hall projects are among the tasks being completed during BBC&S' special Volunteers Week.

The work is a great benefit to the greater campus community and the BBC&S Maintenance Department in particular, as well as to the workers themselves.

BBC&S"You get to know people, and it's a good time to fellowship with the people you meet," said Peter Arthur of Remesn, NY. "It's a chance for service. We like to help out."

Nearly four dozen volunteers and their families are participating. The workers are from eight states -- Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Vermont, and Virginia.

Each year, volunteers perform a range of jobs - from painting and cleaning to electrical work and plumbing. Workers and their families gain an inexpensive time together and hear from special chapel speakers, including Bryan Baxter of BBC&S' Institutional Advancement Department.

"We really like it because we get to minister and meet new people," said Becky Paulhamus of Jersey Shore, PA. "It's like church camp for adults. It's fun. We look forward to seeing the friends we met here every year."

BBC&S is hosting several more camps, conferences, and events this summer on campus, including Teen Leadership Conference, Boot Camp for Junior Highers, and two additional Defenders Sports Camps.
