Mel Walker named to lead BBC&S alumni, church relations

Mel Walker, an author, speaker, teacher, and veteran ministry and church leader, has been named Vice President for Alumni & Church Relations at BBC&S.

Walker, who currently serves as President at Vision for Youth, an international network for youth ministry, will begin his new position on December 1.

"Mel brings the greatest value of anybody I can think of for this position," said BBC&S President Jim Jeffery. "His heart beats for BBC&S. His ability to equip and influence is unsurpassed. His experience in leading our alumni office in the past and depth of relationships with alumni and local church leaders will help us provide outstanding service at BBC&S. He also brings a great deal of knowledge regarding youth ministry and is seen as a leader in his research, writing, and teaching."

BBC&SA graduate of BBC ('76 B.R.E.) and BBS ('96, M.Min.), Walker has also done graduate work at Iowa State University and Faith Baptist Theological Seminary. He is a frequent speaker at youth, church leadership, family life, and parenting conferences, reaching thousands of students, church leaders, and youth workers each year. He has also organized and led several regional, statewide, and national youth and youth ministry conferences and events.

"I'm thankful for the continued connections I've had with the College and Seminary over the past several years, including speaking opportunities, Teen Leadership Conference, and close friendships with Jim Jeffery and other members of the BBC&S administrative team and faculty," Walker said. "I am anxious to get started and am especially energized about working through BBC&S to build and enhance resources for alumni and church leaders."

Wide Experience
After serving as a youth pastor in Michigan for several years, Mel taught youth ministry courses and served in various administrative roles at Faith Baptist Bible College in Iowa and at BBC&S, including time as Director of Alumni & Church Relations, Director of Summer Ministries, and Director of Public Relations. He also served for several years as Director of Student Ministries at Regular Baptist Press in Schaumburg, IL, where he led a complete revision of the youth Sunday school curriculum.

He currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at BBS and Word of Life Bible Institute in Germany.

In his role, Walker will expand the influence of BBC&S with youth leaders, alumni and in church relations. Through his knowledge of BBC&S, relationships with alumni, and leadership experience and networking abilities, he will grow existing efforts and support enrollment and advancement areas as well.

"We value greatly our relationship with alumni and churches," President Jeffery said. "As a vice president, Mel will report directly to me and bring the needs of alumni and a growing number of churches to the front of our focus."

Walker replaces Mark Steckiel in the role of leading alumni and church relations. After seven years at BBC&S, Steckiel has accepted the role of Senior Pastor at Fellowship Bible Church in Troy, PA.

"Mark's influence is clearly evident in the strong relationships he has built over the past years and with his community involvement in the local Chinchilla Fire Company," President Jeffery said. "Mark's leadership of the Alumni Association Executive Council has brought great focus and progress to their work together. We are grateful for his leadership and anticipate God's blessing on his future ministry."

Deep Connections
Mel is the co-editor of two major anthologies of youth ministry, "Pushing the Limits: Unleashing the Potential of Student Ministry" and "The Greenhouse Project: Cultivating Students of Influence." He also wrote three books on the subjects of youth discipleship, mentoring, and evangelism and a devotional booklet for Vision for Youth for students on developing biblical convictions. His newest book, "Inter-Generational Youth Ministry: Why a Balanced Approach to Youth Ministry is Essential for the Church," will soon be released through Overboard Publishing.

Mel and his wife, Peggy, are the parents of three grown children: Kristi, a missionary in Germany; Todd, a Vision For Youth missionary; and Travis, a youth pastor in Indiana. The couple, active in Heritage Baptist Church in Clarks Summit, PA, where he serves as a deacon and leads the college-age young adult ministry, has two granddaughters.

"My family and I love BBC&S and we're excited about the opportunity to serve there," Walker said. "My wife and I met there and all of our children went there as well. So, in many ways we have had a close relationship with BBC&S for several decades. I'm looking forward to reconnecting with other members of the BBC&S family through alumni and church relations."
