Internships give Seminary students hands-on preparation for leadership

Baptist Bible Seminary Master of Divinity students have completed year-long internships in churches around the country, unique preparation that equips them for a range of ministry leadership opportunities.

A key component of BBS' M.Div. program, students worked in a range of locations, including Florida, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Cambodia.

This academic year, 13 seminary students wrapped up a rewarding year of experiencing first-hand the tests and trials of teaching, preaching, and leading.

Many benefits
Internships provide a practical teaching environment where students can become accustomed to the life and challenges of full-time ministry. They assume church leadership roles as they work directly with experienced pastors.

The Internship Field Training program at BBS is unique because of its yearlong duration and because it takes place at the end of the M.Div. coursework, rather than in the middle.

Interning students experience many benefits, including:

- Provision for living expenses.
- Tuition reduction during the internship.
- Ministry training and support for their wives and families.
- Full-time credit for a year of full-time ministry.
- Mentoring and consistent, professional evaluation.
- Placement in a setting that is attractive to them.

Life-changing experience
The time spent learning outside the classroom gives the students a chance to practice what they have learned in their BBS classes. The value of hands-on experience is immeasurable as they move into their next pastoral positions.

Erik Bennett, a graduating intern, served at Bridgewater Baptist Church in Montrose, PA. One of the most important lessons for him throughout his internship was experiencing the "faithfulness and trustworthiness of God".

Erik and his family moved from their home in Indiana to Pennsylvania so he could attend seminary.

"Throughout our Seminary adventure, I have been amazed at how God has provided," he said. "It has been amazing to be part of a growing church. We have been able to learn much from this experience."
