Dean's BlogA Message from Seminary Dean Dr. Mike Stallard

The purpose of Baptist Bible Seminary is to train Christ followers who are also called to be church leaders, whether pastors or missionaries.

But among Christians there is quite a bit of debate about what is necessary for quality education in the training of such leaders. Some would suggest that the depth of academic study in original languages and theology should constitute the major focus. Others suggest that such a focus turns out men filled with Bible knowledge but who are unable to lead churches to do successful ministry especially in evangelistic outreach.

Dr. Mike StallardTo be sure there are some seminary-trained men who know the facts of the Bible and can parse the Greek and Hebrew words but who won't cross the street to talk to someone about Jesus, much less lead church members to do so. However, on the other side, there are some church leaders who are filled with all kinds of ideas about ministry efforts while possessing a shallowness and sloppiness in the preaching of the Word of God.

What is needed is both a depth in the quality of Bible content and practical ministry preparation to become a leader of people.

Baptist Bible Seminary is about both.

Jesus trained his disciples in the "how to's" of ministry. He took them with him, sent them out, and helped them evaluate what had happened (e.g., Matt. 10:1-20; Matt. 17:11). Some ministers in our day devalue the detailed study of the Bible in its original languages and its theological depth for the simple reason that it is hard. But Paul taught the young church leader Timothy not to shun the hard work of Bible study (2 Tim. 2:15; 4:2; 12).

At BBS we design our curriculum and training efforts with this balance in mind. Our students should love people more than books. But we want them to love books, especially those that are helpful in
understanding The Book which points us to The One whom we worship. If such balance between academics and ministry focus sounds good to you, then Baptist Bible Seminary is the place for your
ministry training.

Until He comes,
Mike Stallard, M.Div., S.T.M., Ph.D.
