Defenders head to NCAA tourney after first NEAC championship
The Defenders men's basketball team will play the Ursinus College Bears in the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament. The game will be Friday, March 7, at the Ursinus campus.
If Baptist Bible College wins in this first-ever trip to the NCAA championship, it will play either Virginia Wesleyan or Worchester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday.
Ursinus (25-2) defeated Gettysburg College Sunday to win the Centennial Conference championship and advance to the tournament. It was the Collegeville, PA, school's third title in the last four seasons. It ranked first in the most recent NCAA Division III Middle Atlantic poll.
The Defenders captured the NEAC championship with an 84-73 win over Cazenovia College Saturday. The victory gave Baptist Bible automatic qualification to the NCAAs. It is the first time the Defenders have won a NEAC championship.
With the win Baptist Bible improved to 18-9 on the season. In the championship game, Nathan Penley (Perry, OH) tallied a double-double for BBC with 22 points and 14 rebounds. His dunk in the first half sparked the Defender 9-0 run early on. Justin Cook (Brownsburg, IN) helped his team with 17 points on the afternoon while Nathan Greve (Arcanum, OH) nearly grabbed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Josh Workman was selected as the tournament MVP. In two games, Workman tallied 41 points (20.5 pg) and 11 rebounds (5.5 pg). He was 8 for 8 at the free throw line and shot 48% from the floor, 36% from behind the arc. Josh finished with 18 points Friday evening against Keystone College and followed up with a 23 point performance Saturday against the Wildcats.
