A tribute to Dr. Joseph Stowell II
Dear family and friends of Dr. Joseph Stowell,
The people of Baptist Bible College, Graduate School, and Seminary sorrow with you in the loss of Dr. Stowell, yet we rejoice with you in the legacy of faithfulness to God that he lived and now leaves for us to follow. As a fellow trustee with Dr. Stowell and now as the President, I have so appreciated his friendship, support, and partnership in ministry.
As a trustee of our school for over 65 years, Dr. Stowell often amazed us with his wisdom and his wit. He was a man who knew and loved Christ and who faithfully taught God’s Word. In meetings, it was his intent to lead others in following what he believed God wanted from us as faithful servants. When Dr. Stowell spoke, others listened. He had the demeanor and the patient forbearance to allow others to express viewpoints, then he spoke clearly about what he felt a good decision would involve. That is the kind of trustee we needed during all of his 65 years of service.
BBC&S is only 75 years old, so that means he was with us as a Board member from the early days of our formation with all of the challenges and changes of those years. Because of his love for God and his faithful service to BBC&S, the Joseph M. Stowell Seminary Building was named in his honor in 1990.
Many of us marveled at his meticulous appearance, his humor, his humility, and his love for his life-partner, Corabelle. Dr. Stowell was rightfully proud of his children and grandchildren, too. His remembrances and stories of days gone by were always appreciated and gave context to many of the decisions we make today. A visit with Dr. Stowell was always a day-brightener and encouragement.
As you celebrate the fact that he is with the God he loved so dearly, we celebrate with you. As you remember him today and in the days to come, our prayers are with you. This is a man who will not be forgotten.
Grateful for His grace,
Jim Jeffery
President
