One Savior - God's Chosen Light
Baptist Bible College & Seminary hosted its annual Christmas concert at the Mellow Theater again on Saturday, December 9. However, things were a little different this year. Instead of presenting Handel’s Messiah this year, BBC&S had something special to offer: a special program entitled One Savior–God’s Chosen Light.
Dr. Gordon Mason, BBC’s Music Department Chairman, claims: “This was the most unique concert that BBC has done in over 20 years. The students are very involved in the community, especially in events like Community Appreciation Day. However, the Christmas concert provides a different way for our students to connect with our neighbors.”
Dr. Mason developed the theme of the concert by studying traditional hymns and the Christmas narrative. “In reading and researching, I discovered that the idea of light is an overwhelming theme. Everywhere I looked, I saw the word light, especially in passages that say things like ‘walk as children of light’ or ‘you are the light of the world.’ Choosing light as the theme was an obvious choice.”
Departing from the Messiah’s strong traditional flavor, One Savior was a blend of traditional, non-traditional, and contemporary pieces performed by all of BBC’s musical groups: the Wind Ensemble, the Concert Chorale, and the Chamber Singers. A special choir from the Timothy Christian School in Piscataway, NJ, also made two special performances. The TCS Choir, conducted by Wendy Carl, is a group of 19 students who passed auditions from a choral class of over 100.
One Savior was not strictly a musical production. Dr. Mason enlisted the services of Jon and Rachel Strayer of Ghostlight Theatrical Ministries to write a narrative that follows the events of the Christmas story. Both alumni of BBC, the Strayers also performed the narrative during the concert.
Dr. Mason says: “This was definitely one of the biggest highlights of the school year. We hired professional instrumentalists from the area. We rehearsed. We just wanted to magnify God’s gift of a Savior to everyone involved. It is only natural to think of Christ at this time of year.”
