Minister's Enrichment Day keys on intergenerational ministry

BBC&SGrowing an intergenerational approach in churches and keeping young adults engaged was the focus of a special Minister's Enrichment Day at Baptist Bible Seminary.

The March 18 event drew more than 140 pastors, spouses, and ministry leaders to the Stowell Seminary Building on the Clarks Summit campus.

The featured speaker was Mel Walker, who serves as Vice President of Enrollment & External Relations at BBC&S and president of the Vision For Youth ministry. The day-long event featured four sessions based on his new book, "Inter-Generational Youth Ministry: Why a Balanced View of Connecting the Generations is Essential for the Church."

"I have always appreciated Mel's heart for youth ministry," said Cody Fehr of Alfred Almond Bible Church in Almond, NY. "What he is thinking about in youth ministry is important for anyone to connect with. I just want to stay on top of what he is doing and what he is meditating on."

Special Sessions
Sessions led by Walker included:

-The Epidemic: Why are Young Adults Leaving the Church?
-The Generation Gap: How Did This Happen?
-"It Takes a Church": When Parents and the Church Collaborate
-Building an Inter-Generational Church

BBC&S"I work with youth and this is an opportunity to see what works well and what will help teens develop as lifelong followers of Christ," said Brandon McAfee of First Baptist Church in Avoca, NY. "The intergenerational part is pretty significant and will be helpful to strengthen that part of our ministry."

Alan Lindmark of Harvest Baptist Church in Bath, NY, agreed.

"This is an important area -- recognizing that some of our young people are walking away from the church," he said. "We need to figure out why and what we can do about it."

The book contains research and resources along with Walker's clear approach to effectively making those desperately needed connections. Published by Overboard Ministries and Vision For Youth Publishing, the book is available online at
