Defenders basketball seasons get underway

The BBC Defenders and Lady Defenders basketball teams are both looking to improve this season with the experience of returning players.

The men's team is off to a 1-1 start. They will be on the road for the remainder of this year's contests, with their first home game set for Wednesday, January 8 against Gwynedd-Mercy University.

BBC&SThe team and Head Coach Mike Show aim to get back to the Colonial States Athletic Conference playoffs this year, something the team hasn't done since 2008-2009, their first year in the conference.

The Defenders bring back their top four scorers from last year and have all five returning starters back out on the court, including senior veterans Dan Dodd, Luke Peterson, and Jordan Greve. Dodd's ability to be a threat close to the basket and to shoot from the outside will greatly impact the success of the team's offense. The team will also rely on Peterson, who can always find a way to score, and Greve, who brings his strong physical play and shooting ability.

Other returning starters sophomores Abe Valentine and Dan Decker are set to build off their success of their rookie seasons. Valentine's strong play last year earned him the nomination for the league's Rookie of the Year Award. Decker also had a phenomenal freshman season, scoring 61 three-pointers.

The Defenders are eager to see their promising freshman class in action. George Wion should make an impact with his strength and athleticism. Promising young talents Dan McGuigan and Nick Peters will be incorporated throughout the season as well.

Lady Defenders Looking Forward

The Lady Defenders begin their season at BBC on Tuesday, November 19 against Penn State Wilkes-Barre and feature five of their first seven games at home.

BBC&SThe team struggled last year to recover from the loss of all of their starters from a 2011-12 squad that made it to the CSAC championship. Head Coach Amber Jacobs will be working to develop her young team of three freshmen, six sophomores, and a junior.

Seven players return from last year, including center Maeghin Mueller, who led the team with her consistent shots. The physical play and strength of Morgan Jones resulted in her leading the team in rebounds. Carissa Erdman will run the Lady Defenders' offense. Sophomores Michaela Height and Corin Landry are expected to give the team a boost coming off of the bench.

Junior Alyssa Cole, a solid defensive player throughout her career and reliable at the foul line, is expected to carry more of the scoring load this season with the absence of last year's skilled senior Kelly Bargfeldt.

Three freshman will add depth. Ashlea Swingle will look to bring her athleticism and toughness, Erika Longwell is working hard to improve her skill, Jamie Zalman may play a key role coming off the bench to raise the energy level of play.
