Defenders Athletics recognized for academic excellence

The solid academic credentials of BBC student-athletes have been recognized by the Colonial States Athletic Conference.

BBC&SThe conference this week presented BBC with its 2012-2013 "Institutional Academic Excellence Award." The distinction is given annually to the institution whose student-athletes, while competing in conference-sponsored sports, achieve the highest combined grade-point average. The average among BBC athletes, 3.264, was the highest among the 12 member institutions.

"We are grateful for this recognition of our student athletes academic scholarship," said President Jim Jeffery. "The commitment of our coaches and faculty to have athletics be a part of an integrated campus experience at BBC&S results in student athletes excelling in the classroom, athletic field, and in future leadership. We are also thankful to be a part of the CSAC, NCCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III where these values are shared."

In determining the award winner, the CSAC used grade-point averages for all students who used a season of eligibility, as defined by the NCAA. Institutional grade-point averages were calculated and certified by the registrar of each institution.

"This shows the commitment our student-athletes and our coaches make to education," said Mike Show, who serves as Head Men's Basketball Coach and Director of Athletics and Recreation. "Working with the faculty here at BBC, we really are about the student athlete. It's encouraging. We put programs in place and people support them, our coaches support them, and our students are reflecting that in the classroom."

BBC&SDefender Athletics have been affiliated with the Colonial States Athletic Conference since the 2008-2009 season, when it was formed out of the former Pennsylvania Athletic Conference. Other institutions in the conference include Cabrini College, Cairn University, Cedar Crest College, Centenary College, Notre Dame of Maryland University, Gwynedd Mercy University, Immaculata University, Keystone College, Marywood University, Neumann University, and Rosemont College.

The Defenders compete in men's and women's cross country, basketball, soccer, and tennis. They also field teams in baseball, golf, softball and women's volleyball. A rich athletic history includes 75 NCCAA II East Regional Championships in seven sports and 23 NCCAA II National Championships in six sports. Defenders teams have also appeared in three NCAA Division III national tournaments.
