BBC hosting 'Brain Injuries and Sports Concussions' seminar

Dr. Michael Raymond, a leading researcher and expert in the important area of sports-related concussions, will be the featured speaker at a special educational clinic next month at BBC.

"Brain Injuries and Sports Concussions" is the focus of the Tuesday, November 12 program in BBC's new Recreation Center on campus. The one-hour seminar begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

BBC&SThere is no charge to attend the event. Advance registration is requested and available online at www.bbc.edu/sportsseminar.

For questions and further details, contact Associate Professor Bill Higley at 570.585.9306.

The seminar will be of particular interest to area high school, college, and travel-team athletic trainers, coaches, athletes, and parents, as well as health professionals.

The session comes at a time when brain injuries and sports-related concussions are a growing focus of athletic teams and sports leagues around the country -- from recreational sports to the National Football League. Growing bodies of research are leading to new practices and developments across a range of disciplines.

Dr. Raymond has served as Director of Clinical/Forensic Neuropsychology and Clinical Director of the Brain Injury Program and Sports Concussion Program at Allied Services, John Heinz Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, in Wilkes-Barre, PA, for the past 26 years. He has lectured both nationally and internationally and has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including manuscripts, books, book chapters, and materials related to neuropsychological assessment, forensic neuropsychology, traumatic brain injury, brain injury rehabilitation, and other neurological disorders.

The clinic is sponsored by the Sports Ministries and Sports & Health Science programs at BBC and the Department of Institutional Advancement. Guided tours of the new Recreation Center will be available after the seminar.
