Office Administration majors gaining practical skills, positive outcomes
Practical skills and extensive knowledge of professional business and office practices are keys to success for BBC's growing Office Administration program.
Capable office professionals are in demand. Graduates complete their studies with extremely high placement rates and easily find positions in their field after graduation.
The importance of having a servant's heart and a humble willingness to help to others is the cornerstone of the program.
"Our goal for students is that they strive to model excellence in any office," said Assistant Professor Dawn Jacobs. "We want them to be high quality employees who have a servant's attitude and humility."

Competency and Confidence
Several key areas make graduates well qualified. Students become proficient in the latest business operations technology. They gain extensive experience, master important computer skills, and learn how to train others.
Cutting-edge software and applications are used every day in the classroom. A vital part of the program is gaining experience with the Microsoft suite of products, leading to each student earning their Microsoft Office Specialist certification.
"It makes me excited when I get to use what I learned in my four years," said Abigail Iverson, a 2012 graduate and Sales Support Assistant for Earth Source Trading in Ephrata, PA. "I love being able to help out my boss or someone in the office when they aren't sure about something."
Hands-on experience with desktop publishing software adds to the list of sought-after qualifications students gain. Beyond technical skills, other important areas focused on include:
- Interpersonal skills
- Problem solving abilities
- Strategic thinking
- Effective written and oral communications skills
Care and Support
Office Administration faculty serve as mentors and friends to students through daily interaction—in and out of the classroom. They continue to give assistance, advice, and support long after graduation.
Faculty members bring a range of backgrounds, offering a balance in experience and education. Career experiences for faculty members include education, office administration, secretarial, and executive assisting.
"The Office Administration faculty members do an excellent job of interacting with students in a professional yet personal way," said Alicia Curtis, an Office Assistant with Stockdale Financial Group in Clarks Summit and secretary for Faith Baptist Church of Peckville, PA. "(Assistant Professor) Sheryl Hartley took an interest in each of us, helped us in whatever area we were struggling through, and continues to this day to keep in touch to find out how we are doing. I am so thankful for their input into my life."
Hartley, who serves as Chair of the Office Administration program, stresses godly character along with excellent job qualifications.
"I want my students to learn computer, accounting, and human relations skills that will help them get a job," Mrs. Hartley said. "And to develop godly character qualities that will help them keep a job and represent Jesus Christ in the workplace."
Qualified office professionals lend to organizational success. A solid biblical background provides a deep foundation for those working in both Christian and secular environments. Alumni are working in a variety of office settings—from medical and financial to sales and international trade.
