RiSE wins regional college band competition

RiSE, a BBC traveling worship band, was chosen the top performer at a fall regional college "Battle of the Bands" event at Scranton's Courthouse Square.

BBC&SAmong the more than 200 people attending was a core group of BBC students who came out to cheer for the group, making RiSE among the best-supported bands to play.

RiSE joined student bands from five other local colleges and universities. The groups performed for a panel of judges downtown on Saturday afternoon, September 15.

"We had great student turnout and support," said Geoff Ellsworth, a BBC Admissions Counselor and RiSE organizer. "We are humbled, grateful, excited and amused all at the same time."

Prize-Winning Day
The band was awarded eight hours of recording time in an area studio, a featured concert at Scranton's Vintage Theater at a date to be named, and $550 in cash.

“Seeing students and other people worshiping God together was really cool," said Ashleigh Bennett, a Specialized Ministries major from Knox, PA. “We couldn't believe we won. It was a great evangelistic opportunity and cool to see God work in a way we don't expect."

Each group was allowed time to play two songs, or about 15 minutes. Other schools represented were Keystone College, Lackawanna College, Marywood University, The Commonwealth Medical College, and The University of Scranton.

BBC&SAdmission to the event was free with the donation of a canned food item. All donations collected were given to United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania, a regional community development organization.

More Dates Ahead
After a four-month summer tour for RiSE - one that included 45 performances in nine states - members are looking to the fall for more opportunities.

The team has several fall concerts already planned. Upcoming events are scheduled in New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The name RiSE comes from the team's purpose: To see Jesus' name (which must increase) lifted higher to rise above all other names (which must decrease).

Tour dates are posted online at www.bbc.edu/rise. The listing will be updated as new dates are added.
