Former hostage speaks in special chapel
Veteran missionary Gracia Burnham was the featured speaker during a special chapel hour at BBC on March 5, sharing her testimony and the story of her year-long captivity in the Philippines.
Burnham was kidnapped in 2001, along with her husband Martin and 18 others, from a resort in the Philippines. She described God's faithfulness to change her during her ordeal and as He continues to write her story.
"Change is hard," Burnham said. "We get comfortable with life, everything is going well. Then, all of a sudden, this problem hits and we find ourselves walking down a trail that we would never have chosen to walk down. But during those hardships, please know that God has not abandoned you."

After her rescue in 2002, Burnham founded the Martin and Gracia Burnham Foundation. Its work includes support for ministries to Muslims, missionary aviation, the persecuted church, and tribal missions.

While on campus, Burnham spent time with students and staff, sharing meals and conversations.
Emily Gehman, a senior Counseling major from Oxford, MI, was among those having dinner with Burnham Sunday evening.
"It was an honor to spend some time with Gracia and remember her story," Emily said. "Her sweet spirit is a testimony to God's goodness and sovereignty."
During her time in chapel, Burnham focused on the different kinds of sacrifices required everyday to follow Jesus. She spoke about the importance of people being willing to go to the "hard places."
"Do we expect our walk with God to be one of uninterrupted peace and tranquility? Do we expect that our service to God obligates him to remove all suffering and obstacles from our path? For a lot of us, it's not costing a lot to follow Jesus."
