Weather pushes Defender Athletics off to slow start

Rains through the early part of the new sports season pushed several BBC Defender teams off to slow starts. BBC fields seven fall teams, including men's and women's soccer and cross country, women's volleyball and tennis, and men's golf.

BBC is affiliated with the Colonial States Athletic Conference, NCAA Division III, and the National Christian College Athletic Association. The rich athletic history includes 23 NCCAA national championships in six sports and appearances in six NCAA national tournaments.Defender Athletics

With schedules more regular, here's a look at the now-underway fall sports teams:

Defender Soccer
Head Coach Sean MacPherson, a BBC alumnus, has taken the reins of the men's soccer program. Losing only four seniors from last year, the team has experience and upperclassmen on its side.

After a season-opening loss on the road at Misericordia University, the team returned to campus for a September 3 home opening win against Valley Forge Christian College. With two postponed games yet to be rescheduled, the team is scheduled to play 19 regular-season games.

Lady Defender Soccer
Second-ranked in the country among NCCAA Division II teams, the Lady Defenders are led by seniors Erin Law and Sandy Richie and has several more upperclassmen. This fall marks Coach Chris Davis' 19th year as head coach.

The team has come out strong with three wins, including a 10-0 home-opening win against Valley Forge Christian College.

Lady Defender Volleyball
New Head coach Dr. Elaine Brown, Associate Professor and Chair of the Health & Physical Education Department at BBC, brings her coaching experience to the court leading the Lady Defenders.

The team's regular season continues through October 25.

Defender Golf
The Men's Golf team features three freshman and three returning players, including senior Jacob Walton. Head Coach Dwight Peterson and Assistant Coach and Athletic Director Mike Show look forward to developing the young players throughout the season.

The team has yet to play due to the weather. They are scheduled for six more matches, with their home course at Stonehedge Golf Course near Tunkhannock, PA.

Lady Defender Cross Country
In her second year as head coach, Julee Owlett looks forward to running with and developing this year's team. Four returning runners, including senior Caryn Depue, welcome two freshman athletes this year.

The team has not been affected by the weather delays and has already competed in two meets. The team has six more regular season matches.

Defender Cross Country
Also coached by Julee Owlett, the men's team welcomes two freshmen to the team. They are joined by returning seniors Jared Hawn and Ben Rofe, and sophomore Allen Westerbaan. The team is building momentum for the CSAC Championship and NCCAA Nationals in October and November.

Being unaffected by the inclement weather, the team has two meets down. The runners have six more scheduled.

Lady Defender Tennis
With veteran coaches Josh and Kelly Arp joined by a team of six returning upperclassmen and a couple new faces, the team is in full swing. The eight-member team plays all home matches at Birchwood Tennis Club in South Abington Township, PA.

The team has played five matches so far, with eleven more matches scheduled.
