Master of Education degree now available at BBC
Graduate students in education have a new option in pursuing advanced studies at BBC.
The Master of Education program is now available as part of BBC's graduate studies options. The more widely recognized M.Ed. degree was formed from the Master of Science in Christian School Education, which has been offered at BBC since 1989.
Approved in March by the state Department of Education, the application and approval process for the new degree program took about six months to complete.

The M.Ed. program was created to better serve the needs of students teaching in Christian, international, and public schools, said Dr. Janet Hicks, the School of Education's Director of Graduate Studies. Teachers with earned M.Ed. degrees may also assist Christian schools in gaining accreditation, with the more accepted degree desirable among boards and reviewers.
In recognizing the academic strengths of the faculty, the quality of the program, and its focused mission, the state determined what BBC was offering better fit the Master of Education name.
"We really have a strong faculty, made up of BBC professors and distinguished lecturers from the field of Christian education," Dr. Hicks said. "We pursued this change to help believing educators better do what God wants them to do. We assist educators in Christian schools, international schools, and public schools. Our graduates are in all three."
The curriculum will be revised and updated in the normal flow of the program, she said.
The 30-credit-hour M.Ed. program allows students to target their specific goals by choosing from six distinct concentration areas:
- Curriculum and Instruction
- Educational Administration
- Health, Physical Education, and Sport
- Music Education
- Reading Specialist
- Secondary English/Communications
Courses can be completed online throughout the year. Two, one-week modules are offered on campus each summer.
The 2011 weeks are July 4-8 and July 11-15. Degree requirements can be completed in as little as two summer visits to campus.
The new degree comes with special pricing for BBC alumni and teachers in Christian and international schools. Graduate students in each category are eligible for 30 percent off standard tuition rates.
Alumni need to have completed at least 12 credits at BBC to be eligible for the discount.
