What do I need to get on the Internet from my dorm room?
1. Anti-Virus Software – We require that all students have an anti-virus software installed and updated on their computers in order to access the network. This can be purchased at any electronics store or downloaded off of the Internet. Some of our staff use a free version called AVG for their home computers. This is a cost-effective way to make your computer safe.
2.
Network Card – Each dorm room has two network ports (one for each resident). Most computers will have an Ethernet card already installed, but it is a good idea to double-check before arriving on campus.
3.
Network Cable – Don’t overlook this necessary part of the setup. These cables can be purchased at most electronic stores. We recommend that you purchase a cable that is at least ten feet long so that you have flexibility in arranging your room.
How do I connect to the Internet once I am on campus?
Once your computer is plugged in and set-up, follow these steps:
1. Turn on your computer; once your operating system has loaded, open your web browser.
2. A dialog box will appear that asks for your username and password, which will be provided once you arrive on campus.
3. Once your information has been entered, the system will guide you through the setup process.
Each day your computer will be scanned to verify that it is not harming the network. If your PC fails one of these scans, you will be prompted on what to do next. Otherwise, you will not gain access to the network.
This process is simple. There should be no configuration settings to change, no overly technical work to be done, etc.
