BBC students focus on prayer, community

A day of focused prayer for the persecuted church and a time for hands-on work in the communities surrounding the Baptist Bible College & Seminary campus were key points of focus for students in late October and early November.

Community Appreciation Day
Service projects took the place of classes as hundreds of students, faculty, and staff participated in BBC's Community Appreciation Day on November 6.

Classes are not held during this annual event as servant leadership is demonstrated to the greater Scranton community in a practical way. Work ranges from typical fall-related chores such as leaf-raking to community painting and planting projects. Locations included area neighborhoods, businesses, nonprofit centers and schools.

Students had breakfast together in the Phelps Student Center before getting to work by 8:45 a.m.

Day of Prayer
The special outreach follows Day of Prayer activities held on October 28.

The semi-annual Day of Prayer gives students an opportunity to focus on God in the midst of busy semester activities.

The theme for this year's event was the persecuted church. It began with student small groups praying together in residence halls and faculty and staff separately gathering in the Jackson Hall library.
Several corporate and group prayer sessions were scheduled throughout the day.

Prayer for specific world regions was held in the afternoon, with groups concentrating on East Asia, West Asia/Middle East, South America/Caribbean nations, and Africa.

The event closed with a special presentation of the film "The Lost Boys of Sudan," an Emmy-nominated documentary that follows two Sudanese refugees on their journey from Africa to America.

Baptist Bible College & Seminary offers 38 academic programs, from a one-year Bible Certificate to PhDs. Programs are available through the Clarks Summit campus and several distance learning options. To learn more, go to www.bbc.edu or call 570.586.2400.
