Math expert to talk baseball
The deep connections between mathematics and baseball will be examined during an upcoming program at Baptist Bible College & Seminary.
Dr. Marvin Bittinger, a prolific author of math textbooks and a lifelong baseball fan, will address topics ranging from the physics of a baseball bat to magic numbers.
The program, “Mathematics and Baseball,” will be held at BBC on Thursday, November 15 at 7 p.m.
While baseball is a number-heavy sport, Bittinger contends mathematics has many applications to baseball beyond statistics. In that area, he plans to discuss two-seam vs. four-seam fastballs and the lost war years of late Red Sox slugger Ted Williams, the last man to hit .400.
A Professor Emeritus of Mathematics Education at Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis, Bittinger has written more than 130 mathematics textbooks. He also co-authored a how-to textbook and three-part instructional video series, The Art of Hitting, with Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker and Jeff Mercer, a hitting instructor.
Bittinger has attended adult baseball fantasy camps and brings a love for the game to his lectures.
The event is free and open to the public. For details on the BBC program, contact John Best at 570.585.9611 or jbest@bbc.edu.
