New Name Brings Exciting Show

In its seventh year, the Student Choice Awards came with a different name, Real to Reel. Junior class president, Mike Morter, wanted “something more catchy,” something that would get students excited about this annual social. He desired students to see this event as something new and outstanding. 

Even with a new name, the emphasis was still on the students. The junior class officers ran the event in which students submitted original films less than four minutes long. However, the class officers made sure to note: “Exceptions were made for exceptional videos!”

In a generation filled with visual orientation such as YouTube, junior Drew Jackson desired this BBC social to give students a “different way to express artistic ability.” He adds that the cash prize for the best video was also a bonus of this event.

Along with the five student-made films, the night included clips from BBC graduates and several humorous internet videos. Trevor Coleman submitted a film, as well. The junior class officers added clips of their own, featuring their staged search for the prize money awarded to the best film.

Jack Coleman, Director of Video Communications, commented on the students’ films, saying: “With an opportunity and a little prodding, these students turned out some really decent films.”

John Thomas’ film, Overcut, proved to be the crowd’s favorite.  It portrayed the familiar frantic rush to Jackson Hall when late for class.  Adding to the film’s appeal was “Iron” Joe Schloegel’s cameo role.

Mike Morter and Eric Shelner came in second with a film portraying a sarcastic saga of BBC dating. Other film topics included a stuffed duck attack and a murder mystery.

As summed up by a BBC senior, this year’s Real to Reel was “highly entertaining.”
