A Night on Broadway
On April 13 and 14, Baptist Bible College enjoyed two fabulous nights of Broadway in the Jackson Hall rotunda. In its second year, “A Night on Broadway” has expanded to two evenings to accommodate the growing interest. Staff members Jeremy Kemmerer and Rachel Strayer, organizers of last year’s production, were joined this year by Heather Kocher and Jenean Truax.
Students performed songs and readings from Broadway musicals including the classic Fiddler on the Roof and recent Broadway production The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Music will also be performed from Jekyll and Hyde and The Light in the Piazza.
Building on last year’s success, Mr. Kemmerer wanted to pair something recognizable with something fun. All four organizers agreed on the idea of performing selections from only four different musicals. They desired to keep the performance a Broadway revue but connect the pieces together.
To do that, this year’s format included “scripts from the different shows to transition between songs, which creates fluidity and continuity,” relates Mrs. Strayer. “I believe that this made the production more fun and allowed the audience to get into the stories.”
Mrs. Strayer adds: “The singers also pulled someone out of the audience to participate during a song.” The original idea came from the actual Broadway performance of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
Both the directors and the students put many hours into this production in the past few months. Students were required to memorize music individually as well as attend group practices. Mrs. Strayer applauded the students’ “dedication,” noting that they were also required to meet with Mr. Kemmerer to perfect their individual pieces.
This diligent practice, careful organization, and wonderful musical selections made “A Night on Broadway” a delightful performance.
