High School Choirs Come to Sing

Choir FestOn March 29, 67 high school students arrived at Baptist Bible College from schools in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia to spend a weekend singing together. BBC’s annual Choirfest began Thursday afternoon and culminated with a concert Friday evening followed by a college social, BBC Idol.

Thursday’s activities began with registration followed by several rehearsals and plenty of free time. Students also had an opportunity to attend a worship-leading workshop. They finished the evening with Festival Praise Time in Jackson Hall.

Students experienced more of normal BBC life on Friday by attending chapel and observing a music theory class. Rehearsals were spread throughout the day, as well. The big event of the weekend came Friday evening. The Chamber Singers not only helped the choirs warm up for the final concert but also sang along with the students. College students and faculty supported the high school choirs at this performance.

Girls from Central Baptist Christian School in Yorkshire, NY, who attended the Choirfest for the first time this year, were impressed by how Dr. Harris could “communicate things on [their] level.” Although the music was the same music they had been rehearsing at their own school, the opportunity to sing in a different place with new people made their singing “louder, stronger, and better.”

This year’s festival was a smaller than in previous years to give more concentrated instruction to the eager participants. Dr. Harris led all of the rehearsals with help from the Chamber Singers. The singers were accompanied by Dr. Kauffman.
