Students Vote and Choose Their Favorite BBC Singer

It was three years ago that the then freshman class officers created an all-new social: “BBC Idol,” which is based on the hit television show “American Idol.” The premise of the TV show is to find the next great American pop star. Although some were originally skeptical of freshmen pulling off an all-school social, “BBC Idol” immediately became a favorite event on campus and has continued to be so over the past couple years.

This year, the class officer team (now juniors) began combing the campus for talent weeks before the show. Signs were posted all over campus, and the auditions were held and videotaped in the dorms. The auditions produced a lot of excitement, especially since the winner of “BBC Idol” would win $100. Once auditions were completed, the class officers chose the finalists.

On the night of March 31, students lined up at the door of the Phelps Student Center, anxiously awaiting the start of the show. Once the doors were open, students gathered inside and laughed with friends as they watched the audition highlights video. The host, Dr. Brian Maxwell, welcomed the audience and introduced the three judges: Dr. Chuck “Randy” Emert (he even had on some bling!), Mrs. “Paula Abdul” Konzelman, and Dr. Larry “Simon” Kauffman. Having picked their songs and rehearsed their lines, the contestants finally made their way on stage. With microphone in hand and a visual effect as the backdrop, each contestant presented a polished performance.

After the final song, the judges narrowed the search for the winner of “BBC Idol” down to three finalists. Each of the three contestants was then brought back on stage to sing a theme song from a Disney movie. Sophomore Chris Casoni sang “A Whole New World” a cappella, and junior Richard Stairs played the piano as he sang “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” Senior Jill Huizing sang “Part of That World” from The Little Mermaid.

Huizing commented candidly on stage, “Can I just tell you guys that I have always wanted to sing that song in front of a group of people ever since I was a little girl!” It was then the job of the audience to select the new BBC Idol. Once the votes were tallied, Dr. Maxwell presented Huizing with the $100 prize, and the crowd got to their feet as she gave an encore performance of “If I Ain’t Got You.”
