2006 Awards Chapel

Friday, April 21 was Awards Chapel, which is always a special chapel service for the students, faculty, and staff of BBC&S. Each year at the end of the spring semester, BBC awards various scholarships to selected students. Due to the sacrificial giving of the supporters of BBC and the generous donations given by groups such as LYFE and the Golf-a-thon, the Financial Aid Committee was able to distribute over $87,000 to 125 students.

Months prior to the Awards Chapel, the Student Financial Services staff worked diligently to complete the necessary work to organize the student nomination process, while professors and department heads took the time to nominate students who met the criteria of the various scholarships. The Financial Aid Committee also met to make the necessary decisions that would benefit the largest number of students possible. Preparing for the actual award service involved a collaborated effort from the Student Financial Services office, the President’s office, and the Office of Student Development.

Dave Weinerth, the newest member of Financial Services, commented on his first Awards Chapel experience, "To be involved in Financial Student Services here at BBC is a gift from God. As I watched the joy on the faces of the students as they received their award, I thought of the effort they had expended, the Christian character they had displayed that brought them to this moment, and their families and local churches who influenced their lives over so many years."

The thousands of dollars distributed were the direct result of the generous giving of many people over many years. Weinerth reflects, "I sensed that the Lord was pleased by all that had been done, and that the encouragement of those awards and efforts would benefit the body of Christ for generations to come."

The scholarships received by the students were counted as a blessing of God. To some students, accepting their scholarship was a reward for diligent academic efforts. "I’m definitely thankful for the scholarship," stated Kim Gavlick, a senior in the Secondary Education program. "The award came as a complete surprise—I’m glad my hard work paid off." For others, the monies represented the provisional care of God and His ability to meet the needs of His children. "God has blessed me with an amazing job this semester," senior Cassie Setter candidly reflected, "yet to be honest, it’s much more fun getting money!"
