Basketball camps draw more than 600

BBC&SMore than 600 campers and coaches attended Defender, Lady Defender, and Big Blue basketball camps in June and July. The weeks included a range of activities for school-age children and teens in the Recreation Center on the BBC campus.

"I like learning new things about the game," said Jordan Zaccardo, a 10th grade student from Endicott, NY who attended Defender Basketball Camp. "Doing the drills and being able to talk to coaches and play one on one with them has been really helpful."

Time spent learning with veteran coaches and dedicated college athletes makes an impact as players take part in athletics throughout the year.

"We had a great week of camp," said BBC Athletic Director Mike Show. "Chapel speaker Dan Occhiogrosso (a 2004 BBC graduate) challenged our campers on many issues they face day to day. Several kids responded to the Word and made decisions to follow God with their lives. The campers were challenged on the court with 'the word of the day,' on fundamentals of the game , and skills that will help them improve."

Lady Defenders Camp 'Fantastic'
Led by BBC Women's Head Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director Amber Jacobs, the July 6-11 Lady Defenders camp connected spiritual growth with improvements on the court. Cathy Inglese, a former NCAA Division I coach, appreciated the opportunity to participate.

"I think this is a fantastic camp," she said. "It is so well organized and so on top of things. Coach Jacobs is a good leader and administrator. She expects enthusiasm and doesn't just put them through the drills. She is a leader and a teacher. The girls are learning the skills and being exposed to different opportunities. They are motivated to want to do well so when they leave here they continue to work."

Strong Week at Big Blue
For parents of students in the June Big Blue camp, it was a great week, too.

"This is my son's second year at Big Blue," said Kip Conforti, who owns local UPS Stores in the Scranton area. "I love the fact that the camp teaches fundamentals; it's about the core of the game, the things that they need to learn and understand."

"I think that's what Big Blue does better than anybody. It's a really good program. It's also really comfortable knowing I can leave him and he will be safe."
