Tom Bevan: Leading through Stewardship

Working with God's people to design of end-of-life plans and establish planned giving programs is a true calling. It is one Tom Bevan pursues with a passion.

Tom BevanCoupling experience in finances with a desire to teach the biblical design for stewardship, Tom goes beyond a strictly business approach with those he is privileged to work with. His personal, caring style is deeply valued on campus and off.

Tom has served as Executive Director of BBC Foundation for more than three years. His desire is to see BBC Foundation primarily as a ministry, placing God's Word and the needs of people first, before all else.

Born in Lima, Ohio, I was brought up in a wonderful faith tradition and personally came to saving faith in Christ at age 9.

After completing biblical studies at Tennessee Temple and preparatory work toward becoming a paramedic, I launched into work in emergency medicine. I later served in business roles in research and development, strategic planning, and sales and marketing in the area of resuscitation research. After many years, I made a strategic transition and completed fiduciary preparatory work, achieving licensure in facilitating estate plans and business succession strategies. That career shift rounded out my business and ministry experience, on parallel tracks up to then, and set me up for oversight of BBC Foundation. My being here now is something only God could have done and only He can get glory for it.

I have been privileged to serve some 20 years now in senior lay leadership across three ministries, leading, teaching, and mentoring. I continue in my lay leadership presently at Heritage Baptist Church in Clarks Summit. Through the ministry of BBC Foundation, I also serve local churches broadly through seminars, where I teach and preach on what scripturally based stewardship looks like.

Whether in business or ministry life, my focus has always been on relationships and what is best for the individual before I provide them the direction or facilitation they may need. As a result, I have developed the ability to deal with a wide range of individuals and show forth Christ in everything I have done. As scripture tells us, "one plants and another waters." I would like to think I have done a lot of that, and it has even been my privilege to see Him bring His increase at times by having a hand in leading someone to saving faith.

For more than three years it has been my humbling privilege to oversee the day to day operations of this integral ministry of BBC&S. In concert with the broader effort of Institutional Advancement, I design and execute a planned giving program to perpetuate BBC&S and augment our annual giving, including the administration and investing of endowed scholarships and other purpose dollars. The core focus of the Foundation is a biblically based teaching and preaching ministry on stewardship and legacy planning that provides the basis and context for all we do. As God's people express the desire to be intentional in applying God's truth to their situation, I am then able to practically assist them in formulating what such planning may look like at their specific stage of life.

In the planned giving program, I take what is referred to as a"consultative" approach. It begins with getting to know individuals and their testimony and extends to how they, their family, or someone they know has been impacted by BBC&S. This approach is different than secular universities because it is a faith-based and growth in the Lord discussion. Secular universities can claim to have impacted their alumni, and indeed many do, but BBC&S can claim an eternal impact.

I hold dear to God's people and love the local church. I love hearing the testimonies of how God has worked in lives and impressed upon them to meaningfully participate in ministry perpetuation. Hearing those stories and responding to them in facilitation never gets old.

Advice that I would give business majors is to be involved in what you feel passionate about and place others and their needs first, recognizing this world longs to and needs to see what an authentic Christ follower looks like. Psalm 84:11 promises us "no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly." He knows your needs and what a "good thing" is for you and the proper timing of that. Trust Him even when you can't trace Him and a live a rewarded life with all He will surely provide.

As a father and now grandfather, I couldn't have more godly pride for two now-married sons, both living rightly in large corporate settings of their own, and a daughter who has served on the mission field and continues to selflessly serve here at home as a dedicated ministry servant. As we follow hard after God, no matter the cost, we are humbled to see Him show Himself strong on our behalf.

Hobbies? No, I don't work all the time. I enjoy reading, music, and "clean cars" (finding an outlet in detailing them - but no, I am not available to contract out).
