Aaron Clark: Joy in Teaching
Many students are eager to dive into their careers. For senior Aaron Clark, the work has already started through time as a physical education teacher at Abington Christian Academy near campus. He also leads a gym class for a home school group once a week.
Aaron, a Health and Physical Education major, is also taking extra science classes, which he sees as a vehicle to broaden his opportunities in education. Passionate in teaching children in the school system, he also loves teaching them about God and His Word at church.
I live in the small town of Mercersburg, PA. It is close to the Pennsylvania-Maryland border. I went to school in Maryland, worked there, and all of my friends were there. It's strange; I claim certain things in Pennsylvania and other things in Maryland.
I was raised in a Christian home and placed my faith in Jesus Christ at a young age. My K-12 education took place in the Christian school system. Later, I applied to a lot of colleges: Liberty, Cedarville, Valley Forge, and BBC. I knew some people who went to BBC, watched them play sports, and also came to the summer camps. After visiting BBC I fell in love with it. Financially, there were good scholarships available. God opened the doors for me to come here.
At Abington Christian Academy I have been teaching PE every Tuesday and Thursday. My goal right now is to teach in a public school, which is where I feel God is calling me. I enjoy working with kids. It's awesome to see the light bulb moment when they understand what to do or can successfully do the task at hand. For instance, some of the kids were struggling with the batting stance to hit the whiffle ball. Once they got it down, it is was very exciting see and be a part of. That's one of my favorite things in PE, when they feel that level of success.
One thing about Health and Physical Education majors is that the degree can be used for more than just teaching. I could still work at a YMCA or be an athletic director, because the program doesn't just focus on the education side. There is some emphasis on sports management as well. There are some coaching classes that I enjoyed, too, and may be useful in a school.
My ministry is teaching children's church at Mehoopany Baptist Church in Tunkhannock. In the early fall and mostly spring I work for Josh Arp in D&D Organic Lawn Care. This year, I got to help out with volleyball as the student assistant coach. I enjoyed that and being around Coach Brown, who is also my advisor. Other areas where I have an interest are doing woodwork for furniture with my Dad, camping, fishing, and being outdoors.
Coach Show has really impacted my life in many aspects. One of the big things is how much he cares for us and sacrifices a lot of his own time for us. He relates everything on the basketball court to life. Obviously he cares that we win and perform well on the court, but he cares more about how we are doing spiritually; our walk with Christ is more important than basketball. He realizes basketball is only a couple of years of your life. He emphasizes how we should use integrity in the things that we do. He really builds into our lives.
The size of BBC allows you to build deeper relationships. It allows for great interaction with the professors. I also love the new Recreation Center; this opens a lot of things up for athletics, especially PE majors. For BBC overall, it has a great personal atmosphere.
