Winter Concerts a Christmas season highlight

BBC&SThree Winter Concerts at BBC&S once again mixed the warmth of a casual gathering and the depth of a cultural experience, with the performances ranging from classical to playful.

The Christmas season tradition featured programs December 13-14. Student musical groups included the Concert Chorale and Chamber Singers, as well as individual and group performances by music students and faculty. A jazz ensemble provided further enjoyment for the audience.

"We have tried to create a tradition of strong music, with a great variety that shows off our music students and has an element of culture," said Dr. Larry Kauffman, Chair of the BBC Department of Music. "We want to offer something area residents can look forward to attending every year. There are many alumni, parents, and community members who have adapted this as their Christmas musical tradition."

This year's events include performances of "Gloria," Faure's "Sicilienne," and "Sanctus" by J.S. Bach. Familiar carols include "The Holly and the Ivy," "The Shepherd's Carol," and "We Three Kings."

BBC&STickets for all concerts were sold out, and attendance was strong despite a persistent Saturday snowfall. The Murphy Memorial Library offered a powerful venue for the concerts, with its unique architecture and acoustics.

"Being in a choir is a chance for a group of individuals to come together and do something that they could never do alone," said Karen Butler, a sophomore Music Education major from Sloansville, NY. "In the Christmas season, we talk about Christ being the unifying body for the church; we have unity in Him and we are unified in this singing group that is celebrating Him. That's a special thing we don't get to do at any other time."

The Concert Chorale is a 45-voice choir directed by Dr. Larry Kaufman. Dr. David Harris directs the BBC Chamber Singers, a 16-voice ensemble.
