Convocation Chapel starts year, features new building

A special Convocation Chapel -- held for the first time in the new Recreation Center -- marked the opening of a 2013-2014 academic year at BBC&S on Monday, August 26.

BBC&S"We prayed, planned, and trusted God for resources," said President Jim Jeffery. "The glory goes to God that we have this facility."

President Jeffery's challenge message, "Repentance is the Path of Wisdom," focused faculty, staff, and students on the prophet Isaiah during the morning program. The Old Testament book will be the focal point of President Jeffery's weekly chapel series this year, with messages presented most Fridays.

"If you want to find satisfaction in life, make much of Jesus Christ," he said. "Students, I call you to be radical Christ followers. I invite you this year to love Jesus Christ more than ever."

Held annually at the beginning of the fall semester, this year's event marked the 82nd Convocation.

Convocation Chapel, other messages from President Jeffery, and messages from additional chapel speakers throughout the year, are posted online at www.bbc.edu/chapel. The August 26 message will be posted soon.

A Special Morning
BBC Assistant Professor Dr. Gerlin Valencia opened the chapel and the school year with an invocation. Dr. David Harris led those in attendance in the hymns "In Christ Alone," "Holding Fast the Faithful Word," and "My Hope is in the Lord." BBC Assistant Professor Jonathan Strayer led a Scripture reading in Isaiah 55:1-13. The benediction was given by BBS Professor Dr. Rodney Decker.

Vice President and Provost Dr. Jim Lytle, who carried BBC&S' academic mace in the formal processional and recessional, offered welcoming remarks to those in attendance. He pointed students to the values and mentoring they'll receive over the course of their year as well as their careers.

"You will learn the value of taking profs, not just taking courses," Dr. Lytle said.

A New Building
The new $6.5 million Recreation Center is the largest construction project in BBC&S history. It features a running track, three basketball courts, exercise, cardio and aerobic rooms, and a stage. There are also four tastefully furnished gathering spaces, several classrooms, and major office space.

This 62,000-square-foot building saw its initial use during Defender Basketball Camp in June. Convocation was the first campus-wide gathering in the facility.

The new building will be dedicated on Saturday, October 12 during the annual Celebration on the Summit homecoming and alumni week. The event includes the annual Bible Conference, a range of special activities, and an event with ventriloquist David Pendleton.

Details about Celebration on the Summit and event ticket information is online at www.bbc.edu/celebration.
