Taurina Latimore: A Love for People
Taurina Latimore truly loves ministering to and serving others. As a member of the Student Leadership Council executive team for the 2013-2014 year, she looks forward to working with team members and making a difference in the lives of students.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, she and her family currently live in Queens. Her Brooklyn roots took hold early in life, however, and gave her a love for the people there, especially teens. She hopes to one day establish a youth ministry in Brooklyn.
Taurina is always looking for an opportunity to help others and loves to make people smile. In addition to being the SLC Secretary, she enjoys being involved in a number of ministries at her home church in New York, her church in Pennsylvania, and on the BBC campus.
A Secondary English Education major, she is using the opportunities her BBC education gives her to serve and encourage children and young people.
My family plays a big part in my life. My mom is a correctional officer and my dad is an electrician. They are supportive and fun. I have been blessed with three siblings: two sisters and one brother. My grandparents have played a big part in my life too. They are very supportive as well and know how to put a smile on my face - especially my grandfather.
Coming to BBC was completely a God thing.I spoke to one of my aunts and she suggested looking up Christian colleges in Pennsylvania. I did, and BBC popped up so I applied. I also applied to Nyack College in Manhattan and got accepted and was leaning toward that school. One day I received a call from (Director of Enrollment) Sean McPherson and he told me I got accepted to BBC. I thought to myself this might be the only time I get to go away to college. I came to visit the school, really liked the environment and the people, and made the decision to come to BBC.
The inner-city has been placed on my heart, specifically teens and women. One big desire I have is to go back to Brooklyn and build a youth center for teens. I want to give them a place to go after school, to get help with their homework and be a part of recreational activities - using their time productively. I would love to invest in their lives. One thing that sparks this interest is seeing friends and people I have known lose their lives because they were part of a gang. I want to show teens there is more to life than being in a gang and show them someone believes in them.
Being involved in ministry has been a part of my life since high school when I began working with the youth at my church, (Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church). We were given one Sunday each month to plan the service. I was in charge of that Sunday for the youth and for choosing music. We were even able to sing a song I wrote during a service. I was an usher for a long time because of my desire to serve people and make them smile. At my local church in Pennsylvania, (Berean Church) I have enjoyed being a part of the children's ministry and have grown to love the children - they're great. I also run the PowerPoint on some Sunday mornings, which is fun but not as easy as it looks.
I have been in different ministries and teams around campus. I have been involved in GLOW Missions an outreach ministry to New York City, the Junior Class Officer Team, Dorm Council, and the Writing Center. I will be a part of the Student Leadership Council in the fall.
I am looking forward to being a part of the SLC executive team. It is going to be be a great year. I am a little nervous but it will be great to invest in students' lives. I decided to be a part of SLC because of an interest in serving people and being a part of a team. I am looking forward to seeing how we can help each other and the student body grow spiritually.
My professors have challenged me to grow. Having professors that truly and deeply care about you has been a huge blessing in my life. Just being encouraged spiritually and academically has helped me so much.
At BBC, God gave me a desire for people. I love to encourage people - spending time one on one, encouraging, praying and laughing with them. I chose Secondary English Education because I love to encourage and thought teaching would be a great opportunity to minister to students and invest in their lives.
In June, I will be working with Lifeline Youth Ministries in Indiana. This ministry focuses on working with young people, encouraging them to stay in school, get better grades, and became responsible leaders in their communities. In July, I will be back on campus for Teen Leadership Conference. It is my first year as a counselor.
Meeting with friends one-on-one has been encouraging to my heart and has helped me to grow. I enjoy the social aspect of BBC. I love it so much that I am always up late doing my homework. It is great to build long-lasting relationships, whether it is in the dorm, in the classroom, or just around campus. I love being with people and enjoy people investing in my life. It is a blessing.
