Students, donors recognized at BBC Awards Chapel

The hard work of BBC students and the generosity of donors were recognized at a special Awards Chapel in the Phelps Student Center.

A total of $128,275 was distributed to 137 students in recognition of their hard work and stellar academic performance during the May 3. The amount was nearly $30,000 more than the 2012 awards total.

Many donors were able to attend the chapel and meet with student recipients, forging a powerful connection.

"Giving helps students follow their desire for ministry," said Gretchen Carter, daughter of former BBC professor of history, Dr. Rembert Carter.

Miss Carter, and her mother, Mrs. Claire Carter, attended the chapel and met with the recipients of the Dr. Rembert Byrd Carter Endowment.

Students are nominated for awards by professors and department heads. Those interested must complete an application, and in some cases submit an essay or a letter of reference from their pastor.

For many scholarships, specific criteria designated by the individual donors and groups must be met.

"God is really providing through this," said Alair Omahen, an Elementary Education major from Sidney, NY and recipient of the Students 4 Him Scholarship. "I am really thankful to everyone who gave. This is an answered prayer for many people who are looking for the means to stay in college. I am very grateful."

A financial aid committee reviews the nominees, giving special consideration to those who display academic achievement, student involvement, and financial need.

Among annual gifts are donations and proceeds from the LYFE Women's Conference, held each summer on the campus of BBC&S. The conference raises funds to assist female students with a commitment to full-time ministry.
