Dave Mayner: A Heartbeat for Students
Dave Mayner, a 1993 BBC graduate, has actively applied his college and seminary experience to his current ministry at Binghamton University.
As a Missions major, the Lord stirred up a passion for Dave to reach college students in the United States. He has actively pursued this ministry and is a great example of going beyond in academics and ministry.
Serving with Campus Bible Fellowship for the past 20 years, he lives in Conklin, NY, with his wife, Elizabeth, and his two sons, Daniel and Joshua. When he is not serving on campus, he can be found spending time with his wife and boys, cycling and hiking.
I am a missionary with Baptist Mid-Missions working with Campus Bible Fellowship International at Binghamton University and Broome Community College. Within this, I am involved in an outreach ministry with college students. We plan outreach events, including literature tables, Bible studies, sponsored debates, retreats, and other campus-wide events.
We provide one-on-one discipleship, counseling, and weekly Bible studies. Having about 100 different nations at BU, including 5,000 Jewish students, enables me to use what I learned in the Missions major to my ministry now.
The training I received through the college has been my bedrock,as it taught me how to study the Bible and exposed me to solid Bible teaching. I also gained basic leadership training. The cross-cultural classes helped me to better understand and relate to the various cultures I deal with on a day to day basis at Binghamton University.
I also was able to live, study, and serve in the country of Ecuador as part of my training. Some other areas where the program helped was teaching me how to prepare Bible studies and messages, as well as preparing me for pre-field ministries.
I have taken a few courses at Baptist Bible Seminary. The Introduction to Apologetics course exposed me to the various methods of apologetics. I was able to examine the strengths and weaknesses of each method. This helped me in understanding how to put together better arguments that properly fit my current conversation. I gained insight in how to effectively reach the college students I now minster to.
Students respond differently to presentations and through learning that I have been able to incorporate that into my ministry with college students. One argument that works for one student may not work for another. So the more versed I am in the various ways to defend the faith, the better I am able to communicate to these students. We need to understand the strength and weakness of every argument and use them to the glory of God.
God is doing great things in Binghamton and there are many opportunities to get involved in what is one of the most critical ministries for the future of the church.
College students are my heartbeat. I love what I do in ministering to them and pray that God will allow me to be useful and effective at reaching college students until he takes me home.
