Moises Zumaeta: Language and Learning
While working on his undergraduate degree at Baptist Theological Seminary in Lima, Moises Zumaeta felt called to serve in full time ministry.
After checking into several options in the United States, he chose to attend Baptist Bible Seminary in May 2010.
A native of the small Peruvian city of Pucallpa, Moises is now a student in the Master of Divinity program and lives in Tunkhannock, PA with his wife, Kelly (BBC, 01) and their two children.
While living in Peru, I served in a local church as a youth leader, pastor, and Sunday school teacher. I was also involved in teaching and serving in the seminary. I have a mother and four siblings who are presently living in Lima.
Kelly and I met in our local church in Lima. She came to Peru in January 2002 and began teaching kindergarten at a local bilingual Christian school, which was established as an outreach to the community. We had the opportunity to develop a friendship when we began working in AWANA together several years later. We were married in December 2007 and will celebrate five years of marriage this December.
While working on my undergraduate degree, I took one year of biblical Greek. This class made me realize the great importance of the original languages in preaching and also helped me to see how little most Peruvian pastors know of them. Knowing some Greek made a huge difference in my preaching, and I was compelled to learn more. This led me to seek seminaries in the United States.
BBS was a great option. Some of the missionaries I knew were graduates. My wife is also a BBC graduate. I was very excited about the language program. And now that I have experienced it, it has made me pleased I chose BBS. It was not an easy decision. After praying a lot and seeing how God began opening doors and providing for our needs, I made my final decision to come to BBS. I am glad I did.
The main reason I chose the Master of Divinity program was due to the emphasis on biblical languages and the possibility to specialize in them through the required and elective classes.
It was exciting to sense the Lord's direction in our life and to bring my family to the United States for further studies. We were excited about the new people we would meet and the things we would learn.
Right now, our primary intention is to return to Peru to minister there. However, we are open to other options if God wills. Whether in Peru or in another Spanish-speaking country, I would like to minister training nationals in the biblical languages, especially in Greek and New Testament studies.
I would also like to do further studies and work on a Ph.D. and specialize in Greek and New Testament textual criticism. Additionally, I would like to contribute to the Spanish-speaking world with some exegetical writing.
I attend Independent Baptist Church in Towanda, PA and help teach the adult Sunday school class. I am also a member of the mission committee.
I like being at BBS, and I enjoy interacting with the professors and fellow students. I feel like I am being shaped by outstanding, godly scholars.
