Powerful camp boosts spiritual training for junior highers

More than 100 junior highers, youth workers, and BBC staff and students participated in a special week-long focus in July designed to answer life's tough questions and build a foundation for leadership.

"Boot Camp: Basic Training for Junior Highers" attracted its largest attendance ever, creating an experience students will never forget.

"Junior highers are at an impressionable stage in life, and we can help guide them through it as they think about things like the Bible and how it impacts their lives," said Anna Gatz, a senior Counseling major at BBC who worked with students throughout the week, July 16-20. "We can help them grow in relationships and show them how being godly in their friendships is supposed to look."

Each day was focused on thinking through critical questions facing junior high students today:
- How do I know God loves me?
- How do I know I'm saved?
- What do I do when I sin?
- Can I make a difference?

Life-Changing Week
Led by youth ministry veteran Dwight Peterson of BBC, students grow through individual devotional times, general sessions, and relationships with counselors and new friends.

"Boot Camp is awesome; it's the best camp you'll ever go to," said Ariana Elder, 12, of Horseheads, NY. "It's exciting to meet new people and learn more about God."

Skylin Dellinger, 11, of Syracuse, NY, agreed.

"Boot Camp is a great way to meet new friends and grow in the Lord," she said. "It's a really good way to learn new things."

Campers came from churches in Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Counselors were impacted, too, by the week.

"I love how easy it is to have fun with the guys," said Jon Heisterkamp, a 2012 BBC graduate from Polk City, IA. "We get to work with junior highers and we can help them think through things they haven't already thought through. They're here to learn and they want to grow, and that's really exciting."
