Range of new bachelor's degrees now available at BBC

A range of new bachelor's degrees are now available at BBC, enabling students to earn diplomas more reflective of their core coursework in areas ranging from Education and Business Administration to Counseling and Sports Management.

BBC has long offered a wide variety of undergraduate programs -- with nearly 40 now in place through on-campus and online formats. State guidelines, however, restricted most bachelor degrees conferred to a single Bachelor of Science in Bible, since all students complete a major in Bible.

A change in state law, approved by Pennsylvania lawmakers and signed by Gov. Tom Corbett in June, gives fully accredited, long-standing colleges and universities like BBC the flexibility to choose the names of the degrees they offer.

For years, BBC students have been dual-majoring in Bible and an array of other subjects, but they could only receive a degree for their biblical studies.

Now, undergraduates may get a bachelor's degree in either concentration of study. All will continue to dual-major and receive the benefits of a required major in Bible.

The new degree name may assist students in taking their education to a variety of places where a degree named "in Bible" alone might prove a hindrance, said BBC Vice President and Provost Dr. Jim Lytle.

"The B.S. in Bible has served us well for many years," Dr. Lytle said. "However, our students, alumni, faculty, and administration want degree names that allow flexibility in ministry and show the world all that a BBC graduate has accomplished."

New Recognized Degrees
BBC gained approval for granting bachelor's degrees in Pennsylvania in 1969, shortly after its campus moved to Clarks Summit from Johnson City, NY. It carries accreditation both from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the Association for Biblical Higher Education.

Same Quality Education
BBC undergraduate students will continue to take coursework reflective of a double major of Bible and a chosen area of concentration.

Students, regardless of major, also retain the choice to graduate with a B.S. in Bible. Other general studies programs, including one-year, two-year, and high school dual enrollment programs, are also unchanged.

"Nothing has changed in the tenor or quality of our education," Dr. Lytle said. "The mission of individual programs is no different. The curriculum has not changed. And our commitment to an excellent biblical higher education is as strong as ever. This is about choice and flexibility that best benefits the student and the marketplace. What we deliver, and what results in global Christian leaders around the world, remains unsurpassed."
