Spring Concert performances a seasonal highlight
Three special Spring Concert performances -- including a sold-out Saturday afternoon event -- provided audiences with amazing musical highlights from the BBC Department of Music.
The three-concert set April 20-21 was held in the Murphy Memorial Library in Jackson Hall, a venue with unique acoustic qualities.
"I thought they put together a great program," said Zachery Wolfe of Scranton, PA. "Using a variety of styles and different languages was a great way to worship God. It was very good. It was refreshing."
Student musicians were also pleased.
"Working together as a group in a choir, everyone is important," said Hang Muan Lian Mung, a junior Concert Chorale member from Myanmar. "Everyone is encouraging and we are there for each other. We are also mentored by a great professor."
The 40-voice Concert Chorale is directed by Professor Dr. Larry Kauffman .

High Level of Energy
The Concert Chorale, the Chamber Singers, and One Accord performed a variety of sacred and classical pieces. Included among the numbers were works of
Assistant Professor David B. McGrew and BBC's own Composition Studio.
"Since these are collegiate performers, we do our best to develop a repertoire that reflects the aspirations, the capacities, and even the sense of adventure and competitiveness shared by college students," Dr. Kauffman said. "We're talking about a high level of energy and excitement. And since a good program has to be full of contrast, our musical offerings come from many time periods, as well as from diverse ethnic and national traditions."
Led by Dr. David Harris, the Chamber Singers just returned from a 17-day mission trip in South Africa. The select mixed ensemble of 16 voices travels each year over spring break in addition to the annual winter and spring concerts.
One Accord, now a voice and instrumental ensemble, includes both Dr. Harris and Mr. McGrew. Learn more

"In many respects musicians are like athletes," Dr. Kauffman said. "We spend hours and hours learning how to 'play our game,' but the real joy comes when we get to play that game in front of a live audience. And if we could draw some parallels between music and the rigors of academics, then rehearsals are our classes and homework; concerts are our exams."
