Awards Chapels benefit students, donors

Recognizing and celebrating student achievement and the people who help make their work possible is the focus of presentations held annually at BBC&S.

Awards Chapels take place in the College and Seminary at the end of each spring semester. Financial gifts and other awards are distributed according to academic achievements, ministry involvement, and student leadership.

In the College, professors and department heads nominate students. Nominations are later reviewed by a Financial Aid Committee to determine each student's need and how they fit specific criteria for the variety of awards. In the Seminary, award recipients are voted on by faculty members.

The rewards of being a donor
For donors, the opportunity to provide assistance to students is rewarding. Many donors give in memory of a loved one who had a deep connection to BBC&S.

For Wanda (Southworth) Leffel, helping a student in the Pastoral Ministries program through the Lyle Southworth Scholarship, named for her father, is an incredible blessing. The recipient in 2011 was Ross Janowski of Dalton, PA

"From the day he graduated until the day that the Lord took him home, my dad would say his years of training at Baptist Bible College were the best years of his life and thoroughly equipped him for the ministry to which God had called him," Mrs. Leffel said.

"We are deeply thankful for the opportunity to have dad's memory be honored by blessing another man and his family as they graduate and go out to serve the Lord. May God receive all of the glory."

Making an impact
Between the two presentations, 147 students received awards totaling nearly $120,000.

In the Seminary, the $34,150 awarded exceeded the amount of scholarships in 2010. Thirty-seven students were presented with scholarships and 12 were honored with book awards.

At the College chapel, 98 students were recognized through the distribution of $85,270 in scholarship funds.

Donors can make a difference, giving funds to student scholarships. Investments grow with the generations of lives impacted by the students and graduates of BBC&S.
