Coaching debut is win for Jacobs, Lady Defenders
The Lady Defenders began the 2010-2011 season and the tenure of new Head Coach Amber Jacobs with a 56-31 win against Penn State - Hazleton.
Paced by strong defense and a home crowd, the women's team was led in scoring by freshman Ruth Butts (16 points) of nearby Scott Township, PA, in the November 18 contest.
The season opener comes after a month of team practices for the 25-game schedule, which runs through mid-February. Coach Jacobs, who also serves as Assistant Athletic Director, is excited for the season.
"I have truly loved every moment of being here at BBC," she said. "It has always had a special place in my heart. I feel blessed to be here and to serve in the ministry of preparing students for global impact."

In her first head coaching position, Jacobs brings a wealth of experience, including five years in the WNBA with the Minnesota Lynx, Washington Mystics, and Los Angeles Sparks, and strong play at Boston College and Abington Heights High School near the BBC&S campus. Coaching stops following her playing career included roles at the University of Rhode Island and the University of Toledo.
Coach Jacobs has been planning and preparing for the season since June. She has high expectations for the 11-member team.
"My overall expectation for this year is that my girls have fun playing and that they honor the Lord through their play," she said. "I expect full effort, discipline, and teamwork as we strive to better ourselves on the court in the win column but also off the court in growing as Christian women."
Special Honor Ahead
Along with a season of high expectations, Coach Jacobs will be personally honored later in November as she is inducted into the Northeastern Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. The chapter is one of 28 across the state, each of whom induct local athletes, administrators, coaches, and others
One of eight inductees for 2010, she will be honored at a November 27 dinner at the University of Scranton. Jim Huckaby, a longtime coach, administrator, mentor, and the person for whom BBC&S' gymnasium and basketball court are named, has also been inducted by the Northeastern Chapter.
