Amber Jacobs returning to BBC
Amber Jacobs, a star basketball player at several levels with deep ties to Baptist Bible College, has been named Women's Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director.
Jacobs' new position begins June 1. She succeeds Dean of Students Matt Pollock in the coaching role.
"I'm absolutely thrilled to be back and be a part of the BBC community," Amber said. "This is something that's been ongoing for a few months. God has been leading me through this process."
Jacobs starred at Abington Heights High School from 1996-2000 and then at Boston College before embarking on a five-year professional career in the Women's National Basketball Association. She played with the Minnesota Lynx, Washington Mystics, and Los Angeles Sparks.
Jacobs most recently was Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at the University of Rhode Island. She also served previously as an assistant at the University of Toledo.
"There is a high demand to get the program back into a winning way," she said. "More than that, I want to develop relationships with the girls, impacting their lives both on and off the court, helping them to seek God. I am a very intense person, and I love the game. I will demand hard work and effort, but I want to have fun and glorify God through it."
Big Boost for Program
Athletic Director Mike Show said bringing Jacobs in as coach is a game-changer for the program and for BBC.
"It is a big get for our school," he said. "It gives us instant credibility. We've had that before, but to have a professional-caliber athlete coaching at your school will help with recruiting. It will have a positive effect on our school and on our program."
The assistant athletic director job is a newly created position. Jacobs will be handling scheduling, game-day management for all sports, and other responsibilities.
Jacobs' new role will free Show, who also serves as Men's Basketball Coach, to do more recruiting and focus on leading the Athletic Department.
Strong BBC Connection
Jacobs' ties to BBC are deep. Her grandfather, Dr. Ernest Pickering, was president of BBC&S from 1970-1978. Her other grandfather, Dr. Jack Jacobs, was a professor and department head at BBC.
Her family moved to the BBC campus when Jacobs was in third grade. They lived in Shaffer Hall for six years. Jacobs spent many hours on the same court where she will now coach.
"She had 30 brothers every year," said her mother, Dawn Jacobs, now a graphic designer and instructor at BBC. "It's great to have her back."
