Course trip provides in-field experience and hands-on learning
The Central American country of Belize is the setting for a new course in Baptist Bible College's Science Department, Field Marine Biology and Ecology.
During the May 8-15 trip, students will be studying at Wee Wee Caye Marine Lab, a private marine research facility located on Wee Wee Caye, an island off the southern coast of Belize.
Led by Assistant Professor Peggy Wright, seven students will spend the week viewing the marine ecosystems in the water around the Caye. Daily excursions will include snorkeling in the water to identify species and studying the interrelationships of marine life. Discussions and journaling about the days' findings are also requirements of the three-credit course.
A Unique Experience
The group will be guided by Paul and Mary Shave who own and operate Wee Wee Caye Marine Lab.
The team has prepared for the trip through training in water skills and snorkeling, as well as learning area-specific species. Team building is also an essential part of the trip.
"The trip is similar to a Pilgrimage (Educational Resources) wilderness trip, so team-building is necessary for working and learning together," Wright said. "It is a course in which you learn in spite of yourself."
A Special Location
Belize, an English-speaking country, is known for its Mayan ruins and miles of rainforest. The waters in which the students will be studying are located right next to a research area for the Smithsonian Institution.
The team is also collecting books for the Sittee River Library, whose children's section was recently destroyed by a flood. The team is accepting donations through May 5, to take with them.
The Field Marine Biology and Ecology course can be taken as either a science elective or as part of a Secondary Science Education major. Learn more about the degree program here .
