Special speakers, workshops strengthen Christian leaders

Nearly 300 pastors, teachers, lay-leaders and students attended Baptist Bible College's Church Ministries Conference in April, a special annual conference designed to equip and encourage Christian leaders in their ministries.

The next conference will be April 15-16, 2011, on campus. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Tony Beckett, the author of "Real Life, Real Worship" and "God is Good."

Dr. Beckett also serves as a vice president of the Association of Baptist for World Evangelism and teaches at Shepherds Theological Seminary in Cary, NC, and Moody Theological Seminary in Plymouth, MI.

A special weekend
More than three dozen workshops were offered, ranging from children and youth ministry to time management, music, and worship ministries. Speakers brought years of ministry experience to benefit those in attendance.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Steve Viars emphasized the importance the local church's community involvement. A BBC alumnus, he is Senior Pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Lafayette, IN, serving there since 1987. Because of the growing ministry at Faith Baptist, many in the Lafayette area are being reached through local missions.

"Dr. Viars' challenge to love people because God loves them was the most important thing I gained from the conference," said attendee Marquita Kimmel, of Mt. Holly NJ.

Great benefits
Students like Joshua Zerbini and Zachary Tornow were also challenged in being passionate about ministry.

"I enjoyed the workshop by Steve Viars," said Joshua, a Youth Ministries major from Ellington, CT. "He said over and over again, 'Either be passionate about being involved in ministry, or get out.'"

Zachary, a junior from Wisconsin Rapids, WI, said the conference was "valuable because of how practical it was for ministry."

"The speakers didn't dance around the difficult topics or give the typical cop out answers, but instead they challenged these topics head-on and helped us gain perspective. I left enlightened."
