Students Serve on Summer Crew 2005

With summer ministries at Baptist Bible College & Seminary going strong, one of the key components to summertime on campus is Summer Crew 2005. Composed of six college students, the Crew helps out around campus doing everything from working in the Underground Café to helping maintenance clean and renovate dorms. They may even be found at the pool working as lifeguards.

Summer Crew 2005 is composed of senior Stefan Biggs from North Royalton, OH; junior Jacki Watkins from Canton, PA; sophomore Mike Mantelli from Williamson, NY; sophomore Shane Bennett from Chambersburg, PA; senior Bethany Gibson from Portville, NY; and senior Kat Lino from Fort Wayne, IN.

I talked with the Crew about why they chose to serve on campus this summer. Leader Stefan Biggs was on the Crew last year and decided to do it again. "I chose to be on Summer Crew because last year's leader was challenged in many ways with strengths and weaknesses. I wanted to be stretched and grow as a leader of a group," he said.

Kat shared that she decided on Summer Crew because it is a group. "It's appealing because there is a lot of group interaction. Life is full of groups, and I’m learning where I fit in groups and how to use my gifts in groups," she said.

Other members were looking forward to the spiritual growth they hope to achieve this summer. "I'm looking forward to getting to know God more and spending more and more time with Him," said Bethany.

Shane saw it as an opportunity to learn about servanthood. "I chose Summer Crew because I wanted to learn what it meant to be a true servant. I don’t think you can be an effective leader without learning to serve others. I'm looking forward to getting to know these five and learning how the Body works together," he said. According to Mike, he decided on Summer Crew because it was recommended to him and seemed to be his best option.

This summer is also bringing challenges to the members of the Crew. "The most challenging thing is that none of us really knew each other and now there’s just the six of us, and we do everything together," said Jacki.
