Professor Retires after Many Years of Service
After 26 years of teaching young minds the importance of grammar, literature, and business etiquette, Dr. Jay Long will be retiring at the end of this academic year. During his time at BBC&S, Dr. Long taught classes on English grammar, literature, composition as well as classes in the Office Professionals program. He leaves a legacy of thorough knowledge of the subject matter and a great sense of humor.
Dr. Long began his career as a high school teacher before coming to BBC in 1970 with the intention of being a full-time student. Instead he became a full-time professor and a part-time student. On his application for employment at BBC, Dr. Long said, "One quality that is necessary for a good teacher is the ability to impart knowledge in a way that will help the student. Another quality is that of recognizing the practical aspects of education and giving that training which will benefit the student in real-life situations. I have a sincere interest in students, a willingness to help those in difficulty, and a willingness to encourage all students." Throughout his time at BBC, Dr. Long's life displayed the concern and commitment he wrote about in his application.
For two years, Dr. Long enjoyed ministering as a pastor at Mehoopany Baptist Church before returning to BBC again to teach. "Dr. Long loved people and was always kind and considerate to those in his flock. He was one of those pastors who would stand by you when you needed him," said his former assistant pastor.
When talking with students and faculty about Dr. Long, they comment on his care for his students, his desire to see students learn, his great sense of humor, and his faithfulness to the Lord and BBC. At Dr. Long's retirement recognition chapel, President Jim Jeffery summed up everyone's feelings: "As a College, we have benefited from the faithfulness and teaching ability of Dr. Jay Long, and on this, his retirement recognition chapel, we say, 'Thank you, Dr. Jay, for loving God, for loving people, and for loving language enough to teach it to others'."
