Students to focus on serving during special Chicago trip

Helping young people in urban Chicago while learning more about themselves is the goal of a unique spring break trip planned by Baptist Bible College students from Commons Hall.
More than a dozen students will be traveling to Chicago's South Side, working with Sunshine Gospel Ministries from March 12-21.
Sunshine Gospel Ministries seeks renewal in Chicago through ministries of discipleship, mercy, and justice. This is accomplished through building relationships, teaching and mentoring, developing life skills, care, and advocacy. Its range of services includes after-school programs, literacy education, and work with youth. It operates from a nearly completed new facility, which was formerly six storefronts, near Washington Park on the city's South Side.
"This is going beyond ourselves and doing something out of the norm," said JB Baughman, the Resident Director in Commons Hall. "Our morning Bible studies while at Sunshine will focus on what Jesus says about the poor. This (trip) is about living that out."
Baughman went to Chicago during the summer and saw how students from other colleges were benefiting from the experience as they served others and brought the ideas to the women in Commons.
Students are raising money themselves for the "Rock the Box" project. The name comes from the desire to move beyond the campus environment.
Donations can be made at www.bbc.edu/donate. Choose the "Commons Hall - Chicago Missions Trip" from the online giving options list.
Their daily schedule will include morning Bible studies, team building, and worship sessions as they learn about Chicago, its residents, and work to meet their spiritual and material needs.
